I think you need a big change I waited for almost half an hour before i was served last Friday I think you need a younger generation running the pub I have to agree with the Ex Chilton FC guy, you really do need a juke box and maybe a pool table. The pub seems to be stuck in its old ways.
This needs sorting and quick!

The pub used to be better before the likes of the last 2 Rays were in the house when the football teams came in, there was a much better atmosphere back then but as the years have gone by the crowds seem smaller. Think its time for out with the old and in with the YOUNG! The pub needs a friendly enviroment that welcome all ages, this does not mean underage drinkers of course. The first thing is to sort out is to get out the Animals as they don't purchase food and drink I do find it very unhigenic. The Rose & Crrown needs a pool table a juke box we would like to hear what we like not what the old codgers listen too. So come on guys pull your finger out shape up or ship out!!!

I went here yesterday lunchtime with some friends and found the service welcoming and hospitable, although we did miss out on trying the food as the kitchen had closed
I cant make any comments about the evening opening hours or anything like that, but i will say we had good time and would come back if we were ever in the area

Last death to me would be 10.50, and I wouldn't call into a pub then unless I knew the landlord well and knew he/she wouldn't mind. I am glad you are happy with the G&D, I have fond memories of the pub as it is in easy walking distance for me. Guess it is just not for me and many of my close friends any more ............

Dear Linda, Sorry but I am not one of 'them' as you put it nor am I in the slightest way related. I speak as I find, they have always been pleasant and accommodating to me. I've never had trouble when I have had occasion to order food, and its always been good. I find you get out of something what you put into it, good vibes respond to good vibes. Still cannot see the sense in going in a pub at 10.30pm, you have missed half the night, and most people would be heading home. I'm interested to know what you think the 'last death' is? Most public houses still close at 11.00pm.

If you call expecting to use a public house when I want to sour grapes then I guess I must have them. This is supposed to be a service industry, with service to the customer not the landlord and landlady's cronies only. If I do not want to use a service until 22.30 that is my right, no other local managers seem to mind. I can see the point about not arriving at the last death and hanging over a single pint, but 22.30 is not the last death nowadays. I have NEVER managed to find either of them in a good mood, and the hassle of trying to order food once has put me right off as it wasn't worth the bother. If I didn't know better I would say the previous post was written by them or one of their family .....but no-one would be that underhand, would they ?

Sounds like 'sour grapes' here. Rules is rules and laws is laws. 10.30 rule? does this mean that some of you consider you can arrive at 10.30pm and after and expect to drink on? Why on earth does anyone want to go out as late as 10.30? I could expect it if it was someone coming off shift and popping in for a last pint. I have always found the landlord and landlady friendly, and the food good. Sunday lunch is good value, and the Chicken Curry is excellent.

New year but same old problems; I hope Ray & Pauline take a holiday soon - how about from now until about 2025 ?

What a shame that our village pub has become a point of discussion about poor service. However, it has to be said it is true. When Ray & Pauline arrived they were so warm and friendly and welcoming. What has happenned? Perhaps it is because they never seem to take an evening/day off - perhaps they are just dog tired and hence so grumpy. They complain that 'the villagers do not support them' We have gone less and less simply because Ray and Pauline at best ignore us, at worst glare when we walk in the pub - presumably because they have not seen us for a while. Surely that should mean a welcome with open arms to encourage us to return more often! The 1030 rule is despised and ridiculed by the locals but R&P have dug their heels in and are bleeding customers as a result. We wish they would have a good holiday, come back with a refreshed attitude and back to their old selves - and hold a re-launch evening to welcome old folk back with open arms.

And before anyone asks I don't have a dog and even thought I may occasionally swear in the pub I am not a foul mouthed job whose lack of education limits their vocabulary to profanities.

I have lived in this village for years, and used to love to walk down to the Rose & Crown for a quiet drink with our friends. Pippa and Ray were friendly and friends from nearby villages came over too; Friday nights in particular were great. Then Ray and Pauline took over, and we were no longer welcome as we weren't in their clique of friends and family. Ray and Pauline introduced new rules (like if you aren't there by 10.30 we won't serve you later on !!) Due to their attitude over time we have all found new places to drink where we are made to feel welcome(mostly at the George & Dragon in Upton). I resent paying my money over to people who are at best unfriendly and at worst downright hostile. Ray has no idea of customer service and Pauline is far too often downright rude. So my friends and I no longer use this pub, and would advise anyone looking for a friendly and welcoming pub, with actual customers, to go elsewhere like we have. Oh, and before you dismiss this as a disgruntled kid moaning about a strict landlord, I am a married professional in my 50's with a well developed sense of responsibility !!

Some people must have a real bee up their hive. Ray and Pauline have a heart of gold, Ok sometimes they can come across stubborn, but that comes with old age anyway!! The very few people that have complained about the service at the Rose and Crown must be the kinds that don’t like to be told off for swearing or for letting their dog off a lead. Yes Ray and Pauline have rules in their pub, what’s wrong with that? If you like somewhere where you hear the F word repeatedly or get barked at by a dog or have children/underage individuals in your company then the rose and crown ISN’T the place for you. The rose and crown IS a place more suitable for the older beings although it can comfortably suit the younger ages as well, a place to enjoy a pint and a chit chat, or a home cooked meal with the family pro as long as children are kept away from the bar. Ray and Pauline have nothing against children coming into the pub, but appreciate it when they are asked if it’s ok (that’s how pubs use to run and in my opinion it was a better way) the same with dogs, Pauline actually gives the regular dogs a biscuit and if the children are well behaved they too get rewarded with a lolly. Every last Saturday of each month the rose and crown also reward their customers with a touch of live music. And if they continue to get the growing custom there could soon be more entertainment at week-ends. And besides when you have the lovely Wendy behind the bar on Friday nights, why would you want to go any where else.

I hope they do leave soon, wouldn't suprise me if they are in money trouble as they cant have many customers. I'd love to get some real friendly people in here.
