Spooky Orienteering at Waddesdon Manor, 20th October 2018, 10:00 to 13:00 at Waddesdon Manor, Waddesdon, Aylesbury, Waddesdon (18.3 miles)
A spooky themed Halloween race with a twist! Ideal for families and children, it's a race with no set route - you have to find a series of spooky checkpoints around the grounds, using a special map we'll give you. They might be on paths, streams or in the special haunted wood! Expect a few scary surprises - witches, skeletons and the odd pumpkin. And we definitely heard a werewolf whilst planning the courses... Run (for your life), jog or just walk, there will be a 5k course for runners, plus shorter ones for families (1k to 3k).

Enter on the day, between 10:00 and 11:30. Courses finish at 1pm. Entry is just £6 for a group (total) or £2 for solo juniors. That includes a special waterproof map of the Waddesdon estate, to keep as a souvenir, plus hire of a timing chip to record at each checkpoint and a print out of your result at the finish.

Organised by Thames Valley Orienteering Club and supported by Waddesdon Manor. Register in the main car park. Lots of help available.

Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts,, 9th November 2018, 19:00 to 22:30 at Harwell Village Hall,, High Street, Harwell (1.6 miles)
“Katriona and Jamie are at the heart of everything with increasingly impressive singing and playing.”R2 5* Review
A Problem Of Our Kind is the fifth studio album from award-winning folk/roots duo Gilmore & Roberts – their first release since 2016’s live album In Our History, which celebrated a decade of performing together.
Katriona Gilmore (vocals, fiddle, mandolin) and Jamie Roberts (vocals, guitar) met while studying at Leeds College of Music and began working together in 2006. “We had similar tastes in music” explains Jamie, “and for our degree course we had to write songs and record demos – we’d sing and play on each others’ songs and suddenly we had a load of arrangements that we could play live.”
Gilmore & Roberts infuse their songs with varied musical influences – using the storytelling nature of the folk tradition as a foundation, the duo bring historical, modern and personal tales to life with elements of rock, country and pop songwriting. “People and their stories have always been our primary source of inspiration for writing songs” says Katriona with a smile. “Thankfully there are enough amazing humans – past and present – to keep us going for a long time yet!”

The Black Death In Buckinghamshire, 17th November 2018, 14:00 to 16:00 at Turnfurlong Junior School, Turnfurlong Lane, Aylesbury (20.9 miles)
The term The Black Death is a late seventeenth century invention to describe the pneumonic plague pandemic which reached our shores in the summer of 1348, and from which most recent estimates suggest that up to sixty per cent of the country's population died. Entire settlements disappeared, changing the landscape for ever. Rising wages, driven by the consequent shortage of labour, were resisted by landowners, the ensuing resentment ultimately gaving rise to The Peasants' Revolt of 1381 and leading to the end of serfdom. The period is beyond most of our family histories, but much can be learnt of the plague's effect on an individual place where manorial records survive from before and after the event. This talk will be given by Julian Hunt.
Buckinghamshire Family History Society welcomes non-members to its meetings; entry is £4.
Free help is available at most Aylesbury meetings, where our databases and libraries are usually available for consultation. Come along to see how the Society can help you.
