Further to that - please be very cautious who you give your money to. It is very easy to get a charity registered with the charity commision and this alone does not mean that the charity is fully above board.
There are a lot of charities who collect money all around the country and the money that gets paid in is only half or some of what is actually collected. A lot of the collectors are paid and therefore some of your money goes to them. Many of these charities tend to be childrens cancer charities or similar and very often, if you ask the collectors, the charities appear to originate from the Essex area - but not always.
You may think that it would be beyond contempt to rip People off using childrens charities but please bear it in mind as it does happen but is extremely difficult to Police.
